Ben Westfall Joins QDMA as a QDM Cooperative Specialist 

ATHENS, GA (April 22, 2019) – The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) is pleased to announce that Ben Westfall has joined the organization as a QDM Cooperative Specialist in Southwest Alabama. Westfall comes to QDMA from Southeast Missouri State University where he was a graduate student and a graduate teaching assistant. 

“I am thrilled to be a part of the QDMA team,” said Westfall. “I look forward to working with landowners in Alabama to improve the quality of habitat and the overall health of the deer herd.”

In partnership with the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF), Ben will work with private landowners and hunting clubs to establish and support QDM Cooperatives in Southwest Alabama. He will also work closely with the AWF’s Land Stewardship Assistance biologists to encourage and facilitate management practices that enhance wildlife habitat and meet landowner objectives.

“I am incredibly excited to have Ben join the QDMA team,” said Matt Ross, QDMA’s Assistant Director of Conservation. “His previous experience in land management specific to deer and deer hunting, as well as teaching and working with the public and hunters, make him a perfect fit for this position. Ben will most assuredly use his knowledge and deep passion for Quality Deer Management to help folks achieve their goals in southwestern Alabama.”

Ben received both his bachelor of science and master of science degrees from Southeast Missouri State University with an emphasis on wildlife conservation. He has worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation conducting various wildlife surveys, but the bulk of Ben’s experience comes from his time spent serving as a wildlife biologist for a private landowner in Missouri. In that position, he collected harvest data, ran trail-camera surveys, planted food plots, conducted prescribed burns, and implemented a predator control program through trapping and hunting. He has also been an active member of the Southeast Missouri (SEMO) Branch of QDMA and has personal experience forming and managing a QDM cooperative.
