How to Prep for Deer Season in a Small Suburban Home

Many deer hunters do not own hunting land or even live outside of city limits. In fact, 52% of American households are classified as suburban, while only 21% of households are considered rural! Living in a residential neighborhood can challenge you to find alternative means to hone your shooting skills and prepare for processing your own venison. If that's your situation, the solutions highlighted in this article will be useful to you in your suburban home or apartment.

Act Now on the North American Grasslands Conservation Act

NAGA_Insta_Tuesday3PM_2021.jpgNDA has joined a coalition of ten of the nation’s leading conservation organizations to unveil the largest grasslands legislative effort in history: The North American Grasslands Conservation Act. Since 2007, more than 50 million acres of grasslands have vanished. Fighting to reverse the precipitous declines of iconic grassland birds (53%) and pollinators (80%), the North American Grasslands Conservation Act creates a clear vision for the future of fish & wildlife, public lands, agricultural & ranching communities, climate resiliency, and ecosystem health.

How to E-scout Big Woods for Whitetails

A majority of the public lands available to hunt whitetails in the North, South, and East are made up of tracts of forests—rather than the farmlands of the Midwest. In my opinion, the Appalachian region gives you the best opportunity to get away from the crowds and find adventure for that reason. Figuring out how to hunt these big tracts of timber can be overwhelming, but is far from impossible.

Age This!

When this Minnesota buck appeared in Quality Whitetails, the consensus of our 5-member Age This panel was 2½ years of age, just like our newsletter poll results. He’s clearly slim and sleek overall, like a young deer, but with more muscle development than you’d expect to see in a yearling. Considering that his neck is slim and joins the body well above the brisket (especially just before peak rut), it’s unlikely he’s older.

Here's a New Age This! Buck

Mitch Reetz MI 10.04.jpg

Mitch Reetz got this photo of a Michigan (central Lower Peninsula) buck on October 4. The rut peaks there in mid-November.
